Abstract
It has been emphasized that elimination of parasitic eggs is necessary to bring about a successful campaign in reducing intestinal parasite infections, which are at present prevalent throughout the country. As an approach to achieve this goal, a further study was conducted to improve toilet tanks of the rural houses to bring an effective means in eliminating viable parasite eggs during the period of storage of night-soil. The following results were obtained.
1. The rate of destruction of Ascaris eggs in night-soil was increased in proportion to temperature within 30¡É., although no lethal effect was seen at lower temperatures during the first six months.
2. Degeneration of Ascaris eggs in night-soil appeared to occur only during active cleavage of egg cells usually over 20¡É. within the periods of several months. The Ascaris eggs in night-soil were destroyed completely within four months at 20¡É., two months at 25¡É. and one months at 30¡É.
3. The period required in complete destruction of Ascaris eggs in night-soil was shorter in septicized night-soil than in the fresh night-soil at 25¡É. However, no such accelerated lethal effect was seen at lower temperature.
4. The three-chambered septic toilet tanks was evaluated to be most reasonable and acceptible structure. This system can effectively break life cycle of common intestinal parasites throughout a year even under climatic condition of northern part of the Republic of Korea where lowest temperature ranges -15¢ª¡-17¡É. during winter season which last for several months.
5. The three-chambered septic toilet tank was more effective and simpler in structure than the feces-urine separation system of three-chambered septic toilet tanks.
6. The three-chambered septic toilet tanks were evaluated to be effective in control of enteric bacterial infection as well.
